Participating in te ao Māori events within the school year is essential for fostering cultural awareness and appreciation among ākonga (students). They offer our tamatāne a chance to connect with their identity, enhancing their sense of pride and belonging, and serve as a valuable learning experience.
These events provide opportunities to celebrate Te ao Māori, Te Reo and tikanga, as well as create a space to share Mātauranga Māori and foster an inclusive environment that honours Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous heritage. Through participation in events such as Matariki hautapu ceremonies, pōwhiri, hāngī, a whānau breakfast and kapa haka, students gain a deeper understanding and respect for Māori culture, which promotes diversity and encourages mutual respect and understanding amoungst the students, whānau, staff and the wider school community.
