Common Questions
Some commonly asked questions about our application and acceptance process
Does everyone applying get accepted?
No, the trend in previous years is that we receive more applications in year 7 than we are able to accommodate. To ensure your child's application is considered alongside others, receipt of requested information by the stated date is vital.
Is there a cut off date for applications?
Yes, applications for Year 7 close approximately the end of May the year preceding entry to year 7. The closing date is displayed on our website.
Vacancies for other year levels will be advertised on the school's website, and closing dates will be stated.
What happens after I have submitted my application?
Upon receipt of an application a child is entered on our applicant database for the year of intended entry. You will receive a letter acknowledging this. In the year preceding entry to the School we contact you by letter requesting that you re-apply and attach a copy of your child's most recent school report.
Does the length of time I am on the waiting list guarantee my child entry?
Placement on applicant database does not guarantee entry to the School.
Some people suggest applying years in advance?
Parents are encouraged to pre-enrol their son at any time.
Can I change my mind about the intended date of entry?
Yes. We can bring forward or transfer your child's intended date of entry. You only need notify us. However if your child has been accepted and you choose to defer the date of entry the acceptance process will start afresh at that date. Previous acceptance does not guarantee a subsequent place.
Will my child be interviewed and do we need to be present?
Not all applicants are interviewed, we use the information we receive from you and your son’s current school and our criteria for selection to short list students for interviews . You may access the criteria for selection information on our website. Interviews will involve both you and your son.
Does my child have to undertake an entrance examination?
Students who have been interviewed and offered a place are tested for class placement in the November preceding entry to HIBS.
