In recent years the number of applications for enrolment at HIBS has exceeded the number of places available, particularly at year 7 and year 9.

In the process of selecting students for entry into HIBS, the Boards' policy deems that the Principal shall take into account:

The overall needs of current and future students

The maintenance of the special character of the school

The school has a policy to keep class sizes at a maximum of 24 students. It also has a policy that the main entry point to the school is at year 7.

The Principal will consider and apply the following criteria for selection. The final decision for enrolment will remain with the Principal.

Criteria for Selection

1. Family Association - boys who have a brother attending HIBS
2. Son of a current staff member
3. Special Character - students of families committed to the development and enhancement of the special character of the school.
4. Students who will enhance the educational environment of the school particularly with regard to the special character. i.e. the extent to which applicants meet the school's core values and beliefs in accordance with the school's special character as set out in the Prospectus.
5. Students who the Principal believes would gain most from attendance at the school particularly with regard to the special character.
6. The Principal may also consider the following:
The length of time a student has been pre-enrolled at the school
The placing of students from overseas up to a total of 5% of the student population
Such facts as may emerge from the application and enrolment interview process
