Co-curricular Activities
School production
In 2006 we performed ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. It was a hugely successful production and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. This campaign was well supported by parents and the students are still talking about how amazing it was to be involved.
Students of all ages contributed to the production by being involved in the following activities:
- Acting
- Singing
- Dancing
- Playing in the band
- Being part of stage crew
- Operating the sound and lighting
- Producing advertising material
- Constructing sets and props
- Painting sets and props
- Taking photos and video footage
Stage Challenge
Stage Challenge is open to all students who are keen to be involved. Students work together to come up with a relevant theme and devise a dramatic movement piece that explores this theme. The final performance usually involves up to one hundred students and includes the use of costumes, make-up and many set pieces or props. This event is hosted at the Queen's Wharf Events Centre in Wellington where a number of schools from around the Wellington region perform in a competition.
It is lots of work and lots of fun. The students involved enjoy the whole creative process, but they especially enjoy interacting with other schools and performing on the final day.
The HIBS Dance Group
Dance is actively promoted at HIBS and in the past we have run ball room and hip hop classes. Year 7 and 8 students have also been involved in an event called Dance Splash where they perform a dance work as part of a showcase with other intermediate schools at the Michael Fowler Centre.
Currently we have a HIBS dance group that performs at different key events during the year. Members from this group are often also involved in the choreography in our productions.
Improvisation Group
Improvisation is a dramatic form where actors play games, tell stories and respond to situations by acting on the spot. There is no rehearsal involved and often the outcomes can be very humorous. This group has run depending on student interest and in the past students have attended workshops and competed against other schools.
