Accounting

Accounting is offered as an option at Years 11, 12 and 13 at Hutt International Boys' School. There is also a short introductory module contained in the Year 10 Business Studies course.

Course content for Year 11 is NCEA Level One, for Year 12 NCEA Level 2, and for Year 13 NCEA Level 3 and Scholarship. There is presently no national curriculum for Accounting

Students take up Accounting Year 11 and the prerequisite for Accounting at Year 13 is a high level of achievement in NCEA level 2 or excellence passes or merit and excellence passes in NCEA level 1.

Accounting provides us with a system of measuring and recording the transactions of businesses and individuals in monetary terms. As money is the language of business, Accounting provides individuals with a tool to help them cope with the complexities of modern money management in the financial world of today.

Aims and Objectives

Hutt International Boys' School Accounting as a part of the School Curriculum aims to:

  • Allow students to understand the role of accounting in society.
  • Develop skills and understanding of accounting to enable students to apply their knowledge to individuals and a variety of organisation types.
  • promote knowledge and understanding of accounting as a financial language for individuals, community organisations and businesses
  • Improve students’ understanding of business organisations.
  • Provide students with an increased awareness of, and access to, career opportunities in accounting.

Specific Learning Outcomes of Year 11, 12, & 13 Accounting:

Students will develop the ability to:

  • Examine, understand and apply the assumptions on which accounting is based.
  • Process financial data into meaningful information
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the systems and controls required to ensure financial data is processed accurately and efficiently
  • Prepare financial reports which meet user needs
  • Analyse and interpret financial reports
  • Make informed decisions based on financial and non-financial information
  • Develop skills in communication, numeracy, information and problem-solving
  • Develop self management and competitive skills, social and co-operative skills, and work and study skills
