Outdoor Education is a comprehensive and compulsory programme at Hutt International Boys’ School for students Years 7 to 10. It is regarded as an essential aspect of the special character of the school. The philosophy of the programme is grounded in the belief that Outdoor Education provides experiences and challenges in the outdoor environment and activities are selected which give the students the opportunity to respond to these. It is important that students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to take part safely and responsibly in outdoor pursuits.

Objectives of Hutt International Boys’ School Outdoor Education Programme:

To enrich, extend and complement regular school curriculum
To provide learning opportunities different from those in the classroom
To offer a wide range of direct learning experiences that can be related to real life situations
To aid the social development of the students and their understanding of self
To put students directly in contact with nature and to stress the importance of conservation
To provide the opportunity to acquire recreational skills and interests which instill a life-long satisfaction.

Year 8 Bushcraft, Wilderness skills
Year 9 Winter skills, Snow skills
Year 10 Water skills
Year 12 Outdoor Pursuits, Planning an Expedition
Year 13 Rockclimbing, Planning, Organising and undertaking an Expedition, Communication skills.

Outdoor Education provides an enriching and rewarding experience for students. The programme is designed to allow students of all ability levels to take part, develop skills and gain satisfaction and self esteem from it.
