For Years 7 - 10

The first four years at Hutt International Boys’ School are the formative years for good relationships and work habits.

In Year 7, boys will be taught to organize their time and achieve a degree of independence based on self discipline.

One of the first challenges confronting Year 7 students is associated with having classes in several different rooms with different teachers. They must learn to follow a timetable, find their own way to class on time and bring the correct books and materials.

Courses of study at the junior level lay the groundwork for all core and elective subjects offered in Year 10 and in the Senior school. Some choice of options are available at Year 8/9, and a wider variety at Year 10.

The Curriculum throughout the school is based on the recommendations of regular curriculum reviews. Currently, these support a broad range of subjects in Years 7 to 9, with some narrowing at Year 10. There is provision for leadership development, opportunities for more able students, emphasis on developing creative abilities and a balance between academic, physical and spiritual growth.

The teaching of Understanding Faith and Languages are a reflection of the School’s special character. There is also an emphasis on Information Technology and an awareness of the process of Commerce from Year 7 upwards.

A positive school climate is fostered and continually reinforced in a variety of ways. Recognition of achievement and effort is paralleled by recognition and respect for individual differences and needs. The School prides itself on the individual attention it is able to provide for each and every student.

The students are encouraged to work at their own pace and achieve to their own potential. Profiling identifies boys’ strengths and weaknesses and both are catered for and supported through a variety of school programmes.

Junior classes are split into two bands of two classes. One of these will receive support in order to make up for any weaknesses in the numeracy and literacy skills of students and the other band will receive enriched teaching programmes. However, the core material in the teaching programmes is the same for both bands..

Initial class placement will be made on the basis of results from CEM entrance tests set and marked by the University of Cantebury. Students receive ongoing evaluation to ensure that they are in the class where they can make the best progress.

Above all else, the school fosters and encourages an open and friendly environment, where boys are taught to take pride in themselves, show respect for each other as individuals and support each other as a team. Family participation and support is expected and encouraged.

Homework Policy and Guidelines

HIBS strongly encourages students to take an active and independent responsibility for their own learning, therefore homework is seen as an integral part of the school day.

There are essentially two types of homework:

Regular - given most days in short doses, to practise new concepts, to revise work covered, or to research or read ahead work which will be covered.

Assignment - given periodically to practise research skills, analysis, and presentation skills, as well as time management and independent study. If assignments are given, they should generally be given as well as regular homework.

In general Year 10 students are expected to be able to complete their homework within one hour.
