Our school was founded in 1991 by a group of parents and others who believed that we needed to provide more for our young men. They had a vision of a school where their sons could be provided with an excellent education and learn to be men of character and faith – tomorrow’s leaders. Initially the school was called Hutt Independent Boys’ School and was totally privately funded.

Today the school retains its special character but is an integrated school (since 1994).

This means we have kept our vision but now receive some funding from the New Zealand Government to help with staff and operational costs.

This in turn means we are able to put more resources into expanding our programmes and facilities

There are five vision statements that are the basis of the school’s charter:

academic and creative excellence
personal development, including leadership, social and ethical skills
development of an inquiring mind by a study of philosophical and scientific methods
international perspective, with a focus on the Pacific rim
awareness of the process of commerce The HIBS community are working to turn this vision into a reality for your son.

Building a Future

One advantage of being a young school is that facilities can be purposely designed to meet modern educational needs. All our buildings are new and functional. As well as imposing buildings, we have a garden setting with ‘cottage style’ rooms and specialist teaching spaces. Verandas and walkways connect the different classroom blocks.

The heart of the school has been re-developed to provide world-class learning and development facilities. The new facilities iclude: a Library/IT classroom block, an Administration block, a Performing Arts Centre with a recording studio and a theatre that seats 250. Next to the Administration block is a central canteen courtyard area for students. An Auditorium and Chapel has been added in 2008 with a full Proscenium Arch Stage. The school has a modern gymnasium with rock climbing wall and a weight training area - a major plus for young men at this very active time in their lives.

We have nearby access to the grounds of Trentham Racecourse and we are within commuting distance of Hutt City, Wellington, Whitby and the Plimmerton-Paremata areas. There is public road and train access within easy walking distance of the school. There are special school bus services from areas without direct public transport access
